Why?
Because our recommendation isn't based on getting a vehicle through its next service interval. It's based on helping owners get the longest, healthiest life possible out of their engines.
The Oil Life Monitor Isn't Actually Testing Your Oil
Many people assume the oil life monitor is analyzing the oil itself.
In reality, it isn't.
The system estimates oil life using algorithms that factor in mileage, engine temperature, cold starts, engine speed, run time, and driving conditions. It's a very sophisticated estimate, but it's still an estimate. It doesn't sample the oil or measure its actual condition.
For many drivers, it's a perfectly reasonable guideline. But depending on how the vehicle is driven, that estimate may not always be the ideal interval for someone planning to keep the vehicle well beyond 150,000 miles.
What Happens to Oil Over Time
Even high-quality full synthetic oil changes as it ages.
Over time, the additive package is gradually depleted. Moisture, fuel dilution, combustion byproducts, and microscopic contaminants begin to accumulate. As those changes occur, the oil becomes less effective at performing all of the jobs it was designed to do.
And lubrication is only one of those jobs.
Engine oil also helps cool internal engine components, suspend contaminants until they're removed during the next oil change, protect against corrosion, and keep internal engine surfaces clean.
The longer oil remains in service, the harder it has to work.
Modern European Engines Depend on Clean Oil
Today's European engines place tremendous demands on engine oil.
Turbochargers generate extreme heat. Direct injection systems create operating conditions that can be tougher on oil than older engine designs. Tight manufacturing tolerances mean many engine components depend on clean oil and consistent oil pressure to operate properly.
On many modern European engines, oil also serves as a hydraulic fluid for systems like variable valve timing. These systems rely on clean oil flowing through very small passages to adjust valve timing as driving conditions change. As sludge and varnish begin to develop over time, those passages can become restricted, making it more difficult for these systems to operate as designed.
Hydraulic timing chain tensioners also rely on proper oil pressure, and turbochargers depend on a constant supply of clean oil for both lubrication and cooling.
Fresh oil isn't simply protecting bearings. It's helping multiple engine systems perform the way they were engineered to.

Over the years, we've noticed a pattern.
Vehicles that receive more conservative oil service intervals often have cleaner engines internally and fewer oil-related concerns as they accumulate higher mileage.
On the other hand, we've also seen engines with sludge buildup, excessive varnish, timing chain wear, and turbocharger problems after spending years on extended oil change intervals.
Every engine is different, and oil changes alone won't prevent every repair. But clean oil remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to help reduce long-term engine wear.
Your Driving Habits Matter More Than You Think
Every owner's manual includes what's known as a "severe service" schedule. Under those conditions, manufacturers often recommend shorter maintenance intervals.
Many drivers qualify without realizing it.
